Late Goals Sink Pride Against Columbia

Hempstead, NY – After holding Columbia scoreless for three quarters, the Hofstra field hockey team surrendered a pair of goals a minute apart in the fourth quarter of a 2-1 defeat to the Lions from Cindy Lewis Stadium. Hofstra drops to 2-12 with the loss, while Columbia improves to 8-4.

Madison Geiger and the Hofstra defense kept Columbia off the scoreboard for over 52 minutes until Lizzie Adams scored for the Lions in a scrum directly in front of the Hofstra net, and she would score for the second time a minute later to double the lead for the visitors. Hofstra upped the offensive intensity inside the final five minutes and were rewarded with a penalty corner goal by Gwenn van Dijk with 1:47 left before the end of regulation. However, despite pulling Geiger for an extra attacker, Hofstra couldn't find the equalizing goal before time expired.

Kesia Richardson and Sarah Smalley were both credited with an assist on van Dijk's fourth quarter goal, while Geiger made six saves in her second start of the season.

Hofstra closes out its home schedule on Friday, October 23, with a 3 p.m. home CAA game against William & Mary.

NOTES:
-This was Geiger's first home start of the season.
-Richardson's assist was her team-leading fifth of the season.
-Hofstra is now 11-13 all-time against Columbia.
