Hofstra Secures First CAA Win With Road Victory At UNCW

Wilmington, NC - Nevaeh Brown had 15 points, Chloe Sterling added 11 points, and Sandra Magolico tied a career-high of 14 rebounds to lead the Hofstra women's basketball team to a 54-46 road win over UNCW on Sunday afternoon at Trask Coliseum. The 15 points by Brown were her first of the season as the transfer missed the first 11 games of the season with an injury.

The Pride used a dominant second quarter, outscoring the Seahawks 20-11 in the second stanza to pull away and eventually tally the eight-point road victory.

Hofstra picked up its first CAA win of the season to improve to 1-1 in league play and 3-10 overall. UNCW dropped its first conference contest and fell to 5-8 and 1-1. Hofstra ended a four-game losing streak with the victory.

The Pride faced an early six-point deficit, 13-7, with just over a minute left in the first quarter. Hofstra responded, though, and used a 16-5 run to take a 23-18 lead following a three-pointer from Alarice Gooden at the 5:35 mark of the second quarter. Hofstra would take an eight-point lead into the halftime break as Emma Von Essen scored five points during a half-closing 7-0 Pride run that made it 32-24 at the intermission.

A 9-0 run near the start of the third quarter pushed the lead to a commanding 15 points for the Pride as Sterling got the spurt started and Von Essen ended it with another three-pointer with 4:35 left in the third to make it 41-26. The lead remained in double figures until UNCW used an 11-0 run to close the gap to one, 47-46 with 2:21 left in regulation. Magolico ended the Seahawk run with a layup and Hofstra held UNCW scoreless the remainder of the game to capture the road triumph.

Von Essen added eight points and four rebounds for the Pride, while Gooden chipped in with seven points, four rebounds, and three steals.

Torin Rogers led UNCW with 12 points, while Icyss Storm added 10 points.

Hofstra will be at home for its next CAA contest as the Pride will host Towson on Friday at 6 p.m. For ticket information visit HofstraTickets.com.
