Fourth Quarter Stony Brook Rally Sinks Hofstra

Hempstead, NY – Despite a career night from Micaela Carter, the Hofstra women's basketball team was outscored 14-5 in the fourth quarter by Stony Brook in a 52-49 defeat from Stony Brook Arena in the 20th installment of The Long Island Rivalry.

Hofstra drops to 3-17 overall and 1-8 against Coastal Athletic Association opponents, and Stony Brook's win improves the Seawolves to 11-10 overall and 6-2 in league play.

Carter finished with 18 points on 7-11 shooting, including a 4-7 line from beyond the arc, plus three rebounds and a pair of steals, while Sandra Magolico recorded nine rebounds, eight points, two steals, and a block in the loss. Ema Karim scored seven points to go with her three rebounds and two assists on the evening.

Magolico scored the Pride's first six points of the contest to take a 6-5 lead early in the first quarter before Stony Brook pulled ahead on a three-point play by Sandra Frau-Garcia. Hofstra pulled back in front with baskets by Karim and Carter before Alex Brown evened the score at 10-10 with 2:57 left in the quarter. The Pride and Seawolves traded threes to put the score at 13-13 entering the final stages of the quarter before Caitlin Frost scored a last-second layup and free throw to take a three-point lead.

Stony Brook opened the second quarter with seven of the first 10 points to lead by seven. Points from Carter and Alarice Gooden, plus a Nevaeh Brown free throw, brought the Pride to within two with 4:42 left in the quarter before a Brown layup ended the Hofstra run. A jumper by Ebere Egbirika canceled out an Emma Von Essen pull-up jumper, and a three by Nal'la Bennett put Stony Brook up by seven before Carter sunk her third three of the half to set the score at 32-28 to the Seawolves at halftime.

The Pride exploded out of the break, scoring 13 straight points while holding Stony Brook scoreless until 2:00 remained in the third quarter to take a nine-point lead. Brown, Carter, Gooden, Karim, and Magolico all scored twos, and a three by Von Essen helped the Pride erase a four-point deficit before Stony Brook scored five points to pull to within three with 21 seconds left in the quarter. A buzzer-beater three from Carter gave Hofstra a six-point edge heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Seawolves flipped the script in the fourth quarter, scoring the first seven points to take a one-point lead with 6:41 left in the game. Karim ended the scoring drought with a corner three at the 6:12 mark to retake the lead, and Magolico converted a layup off one of Stony Brook's 20 turnovers to put Hofstra ahead by four with 5:24 left in regulation. From there, it was all Stony Brook, as the hosts erased the deficit with five unanswered points to lead 50-49 with 1:03 left on the clock, and free throws with 32 seconds and two seconds left made it a three-point difference. A last-second Von Essen three fell short, and Stony Brook came away winners over the Pride for the second time this season.

Frau-Garcia and Frost led Stony Brook with 10 points apiece in the win.

Hofstra returns to the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex for back-to-back home games, beginning with a 6 p.m. contest against Monmouth on Friday, February 6.
