Hempstead, NY -
Biggie Patterson had his second double-double of the season with a season-high 21 points and 11 rebounds but Charleston rallied in the second half to defeat the Hofstra men's basketball team, 66-64, on Thursday evening at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
Preston Edmead was also in double figures for the Pride as he contributed 18 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.
Hofstra slipped to 13-9 overall and 4-5 in conference play with the defeat. Charleston moved to 14-8 and 7-2 in CAA action.
A low scoring contest saw Hofstra take a 30-23 lead at the break. Patterson was the key for the Pride in the opening stanza as he had 14 points for Hofstra.
The lead grew to 11, 40-29, early in the second half following a jumper from Patterson with 16:54 left in regulation. Charleston closed the gap to four, 42-38, about four minutes later and the game would eventually be tied at 47 with 8:17 left.
Following a three-pointer from Patterson, the Cougars used a 13-2 run to take a 60-52 lead with 2:40 remaining. The Pride still had a chance in the final minute as
Silas Sunday closed the deficit to three, 65-62, with 38 seconds left. Edmead scored with five seconds left in the contest to make it 66-64 and after Charleston turned the ball over on the inbounds play, the Pride would have one last opportunity to tie or win the game. It was not to be, though, as Hofstra missed two opportunities in the final seconds.
Sunday chipped in with six points, five rebounds, and three blocks for the Pride, which also got four points and six rebounds from
Alex Tsynkevich.
Jlynn Counter led Charleston with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Christian Reeves tallied 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Cougars.
Hofstra is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Monmouth for a 2 p.m. game. That contest will air on SNY and FloCollege.
