Hofstra Falls to Stony Brook in Defensive Battle

Hempstead, NY – In the 19th edition of The Long Island Rivalry, it was Stony Brook who came out victorious over the Hofstra women's basketball team with a 61-44 win from the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Friday night.

The Pride drops to 3-13 overall and 1-4 in CAA play with the loss, and Stony Brook improves to 9-9 overall and 4-1 in league play with its fourth consecutive win.

Sandra Magolico posted her third double-double of the season and second in as many games with 14 points and 12 rebounds against the Seawolves, and Chloe Sterling chipped in with 12 points on the evening. In her first start of the season, Nevaeh Brown finished with eight points.

Stony Brook scored the game's first five points before Magolico got the Pride on the board with 5:15 left in the opening quarter. After Stony Brook's Caitlin Frost put the difference back at five after the media timeout, Hofstra scored the next five points to even the score at 7-7, with the points coming from an Alarice Gooden jumper, a layup by Deivejon Harris, and a Magolico layup. The Seawolves scored the quarter's final three points to lead by three after one quarter of play.

Brown drained a three off an offensive rebound 30 seconds into the second quarter to tie the score at 10-10 before Frost scored the next four points to put the guests ahead by four. Baskets from Brown and Sterling tied the score once again, and Emma Von Essen connected on a midrange jumper to give the Pride the lead with 5:35 left before halftime. However, the lead was short-lived as Stony Brook tied the game at 16-16 on the next possession, and the Seawolves retook the lead at 4:17 on a pair of free throws. Magolico tied the score once again with a made layup, but Stony Brook scored the final five points of the half to carry a 23-18 lead into the break.

The Pride got to within three of the Seawolves at various points of the third quarter, both times off the shot of Sterling, but Stony Brook continued to keep the hosts at bay before upping the lead to 10 with six unanswered points by the 2:07 mark. The quarter ended with the score at 37-28 to Stony Brook after Magolico converted a second chance layup and Stony Brook's Alex Brown hit one of her two free throws towards the end of the quarter.

Hofstra opened the fourth quarter with a 6-2 run to trail by five before the media timeout at 7:45, but any hopes of a comeback were dashed with a three by Stony Brook's Chloe Oliver at 6:38, sparking a run of eight unanswered points to lead by 13 with 4:57 left in regulation. Hofstra clawed the difference back to single digits with two-pointers by Sterling and Magolico on back-to-back possessions, but a 7-2 Stony Brook run made it a 14-point gap with 2:18 to play, and the Seawolves scored five of the final seven points inside the last two minutes to seal the win.

Diaka Berete paced Stony Brook as one of three to finish in double-figures with 15 points, followed by Sandra Frau-Garcia with 13 and Frost with 11, while Frost pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds for a double-double.

Hofstra returns to the hardwood at the Mack on Sunday against Northeastern at 2 p.m.
