No. 23 Hofstra Tripped Up By Bucknell In Season Opener

Hempstead, NY - Daniel Burko scored No. 23 Hofstra's lone goal in his Pride debut, but Bucknell scored two unanswered with Jack Lucas netting the game-winner with just under 16 minutes remaining to give the Bison a 2-1 win in the 2025 season opener for both teams at Captains Field.

Burko scored at 28:51 off assists from Aleksei Armas and Laurie Goddard. The scoring play began with a Hofstra throw-in that Goddard played to Armas. The senior midfielder sent in a pass that a diving Burko headed in from about six yards out.

Bucknell scored the equalizer at 37:06 as Jacob Lewis dribbled in on the left side and sent a low shot that got past Sean Bohan on the right despite his diving attempt to stop it. The game would remain deadlocked until Lucas' game-winner. The junior defender picked up a clearing attempt by Hofstra just outside of the 18-yard box and sent a right-footed shot into the upper right corner.

Hofstra outshot Bucknell, 12-8, and held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Bison keeper Freddie Lapworth, the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, made five saves. Bohan, who was making his Hofstra debut, stopped four shots.

The Pride returns to action Sunday night (Aug. 24) when it hosts St. John's at 7 p.m.
