Buies Creek, NC – In the Hofstra softball team's opening game of the 2025 CAA Championship, the sixth-seeded Pride dropped a 5-2 decision to third-seeded Charleston from Amanda LittleJohn Stadium.
Hofstra is now 20-27 overall, and Charleston moves on to the next round with a 31-23 mark.
Hofstra put runners on the corners in the first inning, but couldn't come away with a run before Charleston scored on an RBI double for the opening run. The Cougars tacked on a second run in the bottom of the second innings, before adding another two runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth for a 5-0 lead.
Hofstra battled back in the seventh inning after
Tyler Douglas led off the inning with a single down the left field line, and
Olivia Malinowski came through with a pinch-hit RBI double to make it a 5-1 score. After
Lily Yepez reached base on an infield single to put runners on the corners,
Chelsea Villar scored a run with a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to three, before the final out.
Hofstra had five hits against the Cougars, with Douglas, Malinowski, Yepez,
Anna Butler, and
Dahlia Palacio all tallying base hits.
Emma Falen recorded a trio of strikeouts in a four-inning start, while
Carley Ernst pitched two innings in relief.
The loss drops Hofstra into the elimination bracket, where they will face fifth-seeded Stony Brook at 5:45 p.m.
NOTES:
-Hofstra drops to 19-12 all-time against Charleston.
-Butler's single in the sixth inning broke up a no-hitter bid for Charleston.
