Hofstra Closes Season With Wild Win Over Charleston

Sean Lane's Ninth Inning Home Run The Difference

Mt. Pleasant, SC - Sean Lane's solo home run in the top of the ninth inning snapped a 15-15 tie and gave Hofstra a 16-15 victory over Charleston Saturday at Patriots Point. Charleston erased a 15-7 deficit in the eighth inning to set up the decisive final frame.

Hofstra finished the 2025 season with an 18-36 overall record and an 8-19 mark in the Coastal Athletic Association. Charleston, which moves on to the CAA Championship, is 34-20 overall and 15-12 in league play.

Several Hofstra players had big days with Luke Masiuk going 4-5 with a home run, a sacrifice fly, and three RBIs. He also stole two bases. Michael Brown went 3-4 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. He also walked twice and stole two bases. Lane finished 3-5 with two doubles, a home run, and four RBIs, while Tyler Castrataro also had three hits. Nick Gallello, Nick Biddle, and Dylan Palmer each had two-hit games. Gallello drove in a pair of runs, while Biddle and Palmer had one RBI each.

It was a game of big innings as the Cougars scored three runs in each of the first two innings to take a 6-0 lead. The Pride got a run in the third on Masiuk's sacrifice fly and then added seven more in the fourth to take an 8-6 lead. Brown had a two-run single and Gallello a two-run double in the inning.

The teams traded runs in the fifth before Hofstra seemingly took control of the game with a six-run seventh to lead 15-7. Masiuk had a solo home run, Lane a two-run double, Biddle an RBI single and Bryce Curry added a sacrifice fly.

The Cougars got a run back in the bottom of the inning on Landon Penfield's solo home run and then scored seven times in the eight to tie the game. The big hit was Penfield's game-tying grand slam.

Lane's one-out home run, on a 3-2 pitch from losing pitcher Davis Aiken (0-2), traveled nearly 400 feet and was his ninth of the season. Brayden Gregg came on to pitch the bottom of the ninth. He struck out the first two batters he faced before a single and a ground rule double put the tying and game-winning runs in scoring position. However, he got Dariyan Pendergrass to ground out to second to end the game and notch his first save.

Trent Jenks (3-1) was the pitcher of record on the winning side after coming on in the eighth.

-Palmer finished the season batting .400, the first Hofstra player to finish a full season at .400 or better since Danny Poma batted .430 in 2012.
