Stony Brook, NY – The Hofstra softball team registered five hits and put 10 runners on base against Stony Brook, but the Seawolves shut out the Pride for a 2-0 win to claim the CAA series on Sunday.
Hofstra drops to 17-26 overall and 12-12 in league play. Meanwhile, Stony Brook moves to 24-21 overall and 17-7 in the CAA.
Stony Brook opened the game with a run in the first inning on a fielding error, and the Seawolves made it 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI double.
Hofstra's best scoring opportunity of the afternoon came in the third inning with the bases loaded after
Tyler Douglas was walked, Douglas and
Gemma D'Orazio both reached base safely on a sacrifice bunt attempt by D'Orazio, and
Nicole Cancel drew a six-pitch walk to lead the bases, but Douglas was called out at home on a force play, and
Chelsea Villar went down swinging. Hofstra also put two runners on base in the third and seventh innings, but came up scoreless both times.
Villar went 2-4 at the plate in today's game, while Yepez,
Anna Butler,
Dahlia Palacio, and
Mackenzie Fitzgerald all tallied singles. Despite picking up the loss,
Carley Ernst retired three Stony Brook batters for strikeouts in five innings pitched, and
Emma Falen pitched an innings with a strikeout and no hits or walks allowed.
As the battle for the sixth and final spot in the CAA Championship between Hofstra, UNCW (11-13 CAA), and Towson (11-13 CAA) going into the final weekend of the season, Hofstra welcomes Monmouth to Bill Edwards Stadium for a season-ending series, beginning on Thursday, May 1, at 3 p.m.

-With Stony Brook's earned run in the bottom of the fifth, Ernst allowed her first earned run in 17.2 innings.
