Fifth Inning Rally, Strong Bullpen Effort Helps Hofstra Past Columbia

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra erased a 3-0 deficit with a four-run fifth inning and the Pride's bullpen turned in a stellar performance as four relievers combined for seven innings of one-run, three-hit baseball in a 4-3 victory over Columbia Wednesday at University Field. Hofstra moved to 11-18 on the season, while Columbia saw its record dip to 10-13.The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Pride.

The Lions scored a pair of runs in the third off of Hofstra starter Christian Rasmussen, who was making his collegiate debut. The freshman pitched two clean innings before giving up a leadoff double to Pat Wade leading off the third. Owen Estabrook followed with his third home run of the season to stake the visitors to a 2-0 lead. The Lions would add a run in the fourth off reliever Grady Lacourciere as Jack Kail singled and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. He would come in to score on Jackson Brewer's groundout to first to make it a 3-0 game.

Hofstra, which left six on base through the first four innings, finally cashed in during the fifth. Back-to-back doubles from Dylan Palmer and Michael Brown brought in the first run. Brown was erased on a Tyler Cox fielder's choice but Luke Masiuk's single put runners on first and second. Tyler Castrataro would double in the Pride's second run and then he and Masiuk would score on a ground rule double off the bat of Griggs, an opposite field shot down the left field line that caromed over the fence in the corner. That gave the Pride a 4-3 lead that they would not relinquish.

Brian Hart (1-1) followed the Pride's offensive spurt with double-play aided 1-2-3 inning, his second scoreless frame. Trent Jenks worked around a hit and a walk in the seventh before Jackson Bauer came on and retired all six batters he faced over the eighth and ninth innings for his first save.

Lucas Dixon (0-1), the third Columbia pitcher, took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in ⅔ of an inning.

Griggs finished with a pair of hits (both doubles) on the day, as did Palmer, Cox, and Bryce Curry. Rasmussen, who had not pitched due to an injury, went two-plus innings in his debut and allowed two runs on two hits with one strikeout.

Hofstra returns to action Friday in the start of a three-game CAA series against UNCW. First pitch at University Field is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Notes:
-Palmer extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
-Curry had his second consecutive multi-hit game.
-Hofstra stole six bases including three by Palmer.
