Nikki Mennella tallied seven points on five goals and two assists and nearly engineered a thrilling rally before the Hofstra women's lacrosse team came up a goal short and dropped an 11-10 decision to #23 Drexel on Sunday afternoon at Vidas Field.
The Pride trailed 11-6 with less than eight minutes remaining before closing the game with four consecutive goals, including two from Mennella (and an assist).
The loss dropped the Pride's record to 8-6 overall and 3-3 in CAA play. Drexel improved to 11-2 and 6-0 in league action.
An early 1-0 deficit was quickly turned into a 3-1 lead as three different Pride players scored for Hofstra to make it 3-1 with 6:07 left in the second quarter. The Pride would take a one-goal lead into the halftime break before the Dragons tied the score at three early in the third quarter.
Madeleine Rudolph and Mennella would answer for the Pride, though, and Hofstra took a 5-3 lead less than four minutes into the stanza.
Drexel would take control, though, and scored seven straight goals to lead 10-5 less than a minute into the final quarter. After the teams alternated goals, the Pride would begin its huge attempted rally with a
Kayleigh Bender goal with 7:20 showing on the clock.
Bender added a pair of goals for the Pride, which got eight draw controls from
Christine Dannenfelser.
Jacky Sutherland posted four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Luchianna Cardello had another strong game with 10 saves for the Pride.
Bea Buckley had five points on three goals and two assists for the Dragons, while Kate Marano added four points on a goal and three assists.
Hofstra will head to Monmouth for its final road game of the regular season next Saturday when it takes on Monmouth at 11 a.m. That game will air on FloCollege.
NOTES
- Hofstra now leads the all-time series with Drexel, 28-16.
- The hat trick was the 10th this season and 20th in the career for Mennella.
- The 10 saves marked the third straight game that Cardello has reached double figures in saves and the fifth time this season.
