Stony Brook, NY – The Hofstra women's basketball team battled back from a seven-point deficit late against Stony Brook, but it wasn't enough as the Seawolves won 47-42 in a low-scoring Coastal Athletic Association contest from Stony Brook Arena.
The loss puts Hofstra at 9-12 overall and 4-6 in league play, and Stony Brook improves to 11-11 overall and 6-5 in the conference.
Ramatoulaye Keita and
LaNae' Corbett tied for the team-lead with nine points apiece, while Keita recorded 18 rebounds for a new personal-best.
Janaia Fargo and
Sabrina Larsson dished out two assists each to pace the team, and Larsson and
Micaela Carter each recorded a pair of steals.
With the score tied at 5-5 after four minutes of play, Stony Brook pulled in front with four consecutive points before the Pride evened the score with back-to-back baskets by Corbett, and Keita put the Pride in front with a tough layup at 2:21 to put the score at 11-9 one quarter of action. Hofstra's lead grew to five in the early stages of the second quarter before a three from Stony Brook's Breauna Ware knocked down a three at 5:45 to cut Hofstra's lead to two.
Janaia Fargo connected on a deep three with 2:53 before halftime to put the Pride's lead back at five points before a two from Ware. A fast break layup by Keita at the 1:42 mark put the guests in front by five, but four points inside the final 1:26 put the difference at 21-20 in favor of Hofstra going into halftime.
Stony Brook took a one-point lead to open the third quarter before
Zyheima Swint put the Pride back on top with a turnaround jumper on the next possession. A basket from Carter gave Hofstra a three-point lead two minutes into the quarter, but Stony Brook rallied for five unanswered points to lead by two at the 4:10 mark. A free throw by Corbett brought Hofstra to within one, but Stony Brook rattled off a 6-2 run lasting the final 2:12 of the frame to lead by five going into the fourth quarter.
The teams traded two-point baskets inside the first two minutes of the fourth quarter before Stony Brook upped its lead to seven on free throws at 8:00 and 7:20. Jump shots from
Emma Von Essen and Swint at 7:01 and 5:26, respectively, brought the Pride to within three, but four Stony Brook free throws stretched the lead to seven points with under four minutes remaining in regulation. Baskets from Carter and Swint put the Pride within three with 2:11 still to play, but it would be the closest Hofstra would come as Stony Brook scored saw out the game and prevented Hofstra from hitting any field goals the rest of the way before the final buzzer.
Ware led all players with 21 points in Stony Brook's win, while Lauren Fillien and Shamarla King posted a team-leading nine rebounds for the hosts.
