Boston, MA – The Hofstra women's basketball team dropped a road Coastal Athletic Association contest on Sunday, losing 61-51 to Northeastern from the Cabot Center.
Hofstra's record slips to 9-15 overall and 4-9 in the CAA with the loss, while Northeastern improves to 2-20 overall and 1-12 in the conference.
Ramatoulaye Keita finished as the team's leading scorer and rebounder with 12 points and nine rebounds.
LaNae' Corbett and
Alarice Gooden tallied eight points each versus the Huskies, while
Sabrina Larsson and
Janaia Fargo dished out a team-leading two assists apiece.
With Northeastern leading 8-4 at the 5:22 mark of the opening quarter, Hofstra scored the next eight unanswered points thanks to four points from
Ayen Angoi and two points by Larsson and Corbett to lead by four at 3:35 in the quarter. Northeastern closed the gap to a one-point difference on a three, and
Zyheima Swint scored on a contested layup to make it a three-point game with 1:30 to go before the buzzer. After
Emma Von Essen connected on a pair of free throws, the quarter ended on a layup by Northeastern's Abigail Jegede to put the score at 16-15 Hofstra.
Gooden kicked off the second quarter with a three 16 seconds into the action, but Northeastern rallied for four unanswered points to tie the game at 19-19 with 7:02 to play. Gooden's second three of the quarter ended the run and gave Hofstra a three-point lead at the 6:01 mark, and a trey from Fargo at 5:41 canceled out a Northeastern two to give the Pride a four-point cushion. Hofstra's lead went back to four after Keita scored on a driving layup after Northeastern's Alyssa Staten converted a layup, but a fast break three-pointer cut the difference to one point with 4:11 remaining before halftime. Keita scored on the next two Hofstra possessions to put the guests ahead by five at the 2:41 mark. The teams combined for four free throws inside the final 2:20 to put the score at 33-28 in favor of the Pride at the break.
Hofstra saw its lead grow to six early in the third quarter before Northeastern went on a 7-0 run lasting from the 7:58 mark until Keit converted a free throw at 5:50, evening the score at 37-37. Jegede scored the next four Huskies points to take a four-point lead, but Corbett countered with four points of her own to tie things back up at 41-41. Northeastern scored the final points of the quarter at 2:06 to lead by two going into the fourth.
The Huskies exploded out of the break to score 11 unanswered points to build a 13-point difference with 5:35 left in the quarter before Fargo ended the run with a close-range jumper. Points from Corbett, Keita, and
Micaela Carter brought the Pride to within six with 1:19 left, but Northeastern scored four free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Jegede scored 20 points and Staten pulled down 12 rebounds for the Huskies.
