Hofstra Takes Down Pittsburgh Behind Davis' Career Night

Pittsburgh, PA - Cruz Davis scored a career-high 36 points and added seven assists to lead Hofstra to an impressive 80-73 victory over Pittsburgh Sunday evening at the Petersen Events Center. The Pride took the lead for good with 8:38 to go in the first half and did not look back in earning their first win over an ACC program since the 2015-16 season.

Hofstra moved to 6-4 on the season with the win, while the Panthers slipped to 5-5. 

The opening 11 minutes of the contest featured four tie scores with the last at 16-16 with 8:59 to go. Davis would snap the tie with a step back jumper at the 8:38 mark to start a 7-0 run that featured a second bucket from the junior guard and a three-pointer from Jaeden Roberts for a 23-16 lead with 6:56 to go. Another run, this one a 13-4 spurt, gave the Pride their largest lead of the half, 36-20 with 1:47 to go.

Hofstra's lead reached 17 early in the second half on a dunk from Victory Onuetu one minute into the half for a 40-23 lead. The Panthers would chip away and make it a three point game, 50-47, with 11:18 to go on a Brandin Cummings three-pointer. A 12-5 Hofstra run featuring five points each by Davis and German Plotnikov gave the Pride a 62-52 advantage with 7:46 remaining. Pitt would not get closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Davis went 14-25 from the floor and was 5-11 from beyond the arc. He added three free throws as well in his career night. Onuetu had 10 points for the Pride and went 5-5 from the floor. Plotnikov and Preston Edmead each had eight points. 

Cummings led Pittsburgh with 34 points, while Barry Dunning Jr. added 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Notes:
-This was the first meeting between Hofstra and Pittsburgh
-Hofstra's last win over an ACC team came against Florida State at the 2015 Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands. 
-The win was Hofstra's sixth all-time against the ACC.
-Davis' previous career-high was 28 points.
-Davis also set new personal bests for field goals made and attempted. 
-Davis has scored in double-figures in all 10 games this season.
-Plotnikov and Biggie Patterson led Hofstra with five rebounds. 
-Edmead was 8-9 from the free throw line.
