Albany, NY –
Micaela Carter posted a career-high 15 points and
Alarice Gooden set a new career-high with four steals against UAlbany, but a late rally by the Hofstra women's basketball team came up short as the Great Danes held on for a 52-43 win over the Pride from Broadview Arena.
The result puts Hofstra at 2-8 and UAlbany at 10-3.
Carter hit six field goals, including one from beyond the arc, and went 2-2 from the free throw line for her 15 points against the Great Danes.
Chloe Sterling, who finished with nine points, tied
Sandra Magolico for the team lead in rebounds with seven and paced the Pride with four assists. In addition to her four steals, Gooden finished the game with nine points.
UAlbany scored the first eight points of the contest before Carter converted a driving layup at 7:14 to put the Pride on the board. After the teams traded points on a Magolico basket and a jumper from Lara Langermann, UAlbany went on an 11-2 run lasting the final 5:17 of the first quarter to put the hosts ahead by 15.
After another basket by UAlbany to open the second quarter, Hofstra whittled away the Great Danes lead with an 8-2 run lasting nearly five minutes, starting at the 8:09 mark on a turnaround layup by
Deivejon Harris and featuring four points by Carter and two free throws by Gooden, to cut the deficit to 11. The quarter ended with UAlbany scoring six unanswered points, setting the score at 31-14 heading into halftime.
A 9-2 Hofstra run to open the third quarter – plus holding the UAlbany offense scoreless for over seven minutes – allowed the Pride to close to gap to 10 points. Points by Carter, Sterling, and Magolico helped Hofstra claw back into the game before UAlbany ended its scoring drought with threes on back-to-back possessions to lead 39-23 going into game's final quarter.
With the Great Danes holding a 19-point lead with 5:24 still to play in regulation, Hofstra rallied for a 15-2 run lasting 3:23 to make it a six-point game. Sterling scored seven points during the run, including five points in a span of 20 seconds, while scored six points, and Magolico and
Ema Karim helped cut into the Great Dane lead. It would be the closest Hofstra came to overtaking UAlbany, however, as the hosts clamped down defensively and allowed only a two-point jumper by Carter in the final 54 seconds of the contest.
Delanie Hill led UAlbany as one of three with double figures in the game with 14 points, while Amaya Stewart produced 11 points. Martina Borrellas led all players with 14 rebounds.
