Top-Seeded Hofstra Falls To No. 2 Stony Brook In CAA Semifinals

Hempstead, NY - Playing down a man for the final 13:49, top-seeded and 20th-ranked Hofstra surrendered two goals as second-seeded Stony Brook pulled off a 2-1 upset Sunday in the CAA North Division Semifinals at Captains Field. The loss snapped Hofstra's four-year run as CAA Champions.

Hofstra, which will look to make the NCAA Championship as an at-large selection, moves to 12-5 on the season. The loss also snapped the Pride's winning streak at eight games, which was the longest in the nation. Stony Brook won for the fifth consecutive game and advanced to the CAA Championship match with a 9-4-5 record.

Hofstra started quickly and controlled possession for much of the first half. The Pride scored a relatively early goal as Laurie Goddard's shot from inside the 18-yard box deflected off a defender and past keeper Heidar Hermannsson for a 1-0 lead. Stefano Campisi had the assist on the goal. The Pride defense was on point in the opening 45, limiting the Seawolves to no shots.

The game was physical with 10 cards issued. None was bigger than the red card assessed to Hofstra defender Thengill Orrasson at 76:11. He had already picked up a yellow card early in the second half and was sent off. The Seawolves capitalized in short order as  Scemar Webb scored off a pass from Nelson Reynoso at 78:47 and the Ryan Farr netted the game-winner at 79:29 off another feed from Reynoso.

Hermannsson made four saves for Stony Brook. Sean Bohan, who came on to play the second half in goal for Hofstra, stopped two shots for the Pride.

Stony Brook will face the winner of Sunday night's South Division Semifinal between Elon and Campbell next weekend. NCAA Selections will be made Monday, November 17.
