Carolina, Puerto Rico – The Hofstra women's basketball team's time in sunny Puerto Rico has come to an end, as the Pride dropped a 72-53 decision to East Carolina on the final day of the 2025 Discover Puerto Rico Shootout from Coliseo Guillermo Angulo. Hofstra is now 1-5 on the season following the defeat, and East Carolina evens its record at 4-4.
Alarice Gooden posted her fourth double-digit point total of the season with 10 against the Pirates while adding four rebounds, two steals, an assist, and a block in a season-high 37 minutes on the court.
Ayen Angoi finished with eight points and a game-high eight rebounds, and
Sana'a Garrett assisted on two Pride baskets.
East Carolina got out to a 9-0 lead before Gooden put the Pride on the scoreboard with a three at the 7:40 mark. The Pirates' lead grew back to nine with five of the next eight points before
Micaela Carter converted a jumper and free throw and
Ema Karim sank a three at 4:37 to make it a three-point difference. East Carolina ended the quarter on a 10-0 run, including back-to-back threes following Karim's three, to lead 25-12.
ECU outscored Hofstra 11-10 in the second quarter to hold a 14-point halftime lead. The Pirates ballooned its lead to as large as 20 points with 3:33 remaining in the third quarter before the Pride ended the frame on an impressive 10-3 run heading into the fourth.
Maddie Pounds opened the final quarter with a second chance layup 23 seconds into the action, but East Carolina rattled off eight unanswered points while keeping the Pride scoreless until a three from Gooden at 4:13. The Pirates kept the double-digit lead for the remainder of regulation.
Taylor Barner led East Carolina with 18 points, followed by Savannah Brooks with 12, and Kennedy Fauntleroy and Anzhané Hutton with 11 each. Keanna Rembert was the Pirates' leading rebounder with five.
Hofstra returns to the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex for its next two games, beginning next Saturday, December 6, at 2 p.m. versus Fordham.
