Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra women's basketball team will be traveling outside the United States for its next set of challenging non-conference games, as the Pride will be heading to Puerto Rico for the 2025 Discover Puerto Rico Shootout.
The three-day, nine-team event will take place at Coliseo Guillermo Angulo in Carolina, Puerto Rico. The trip will mark Hofstra's first visit to Puerto Rico since the 2015 San Juan Shootout, where the Pride went 1-1 with a win over Coastal Carolina and a loss to #7 Oregon State.
Hofstra will face #7 Maryland on Thursday, November 27, at 3 p.m. (ET)/4 p.m. (AT), before facing East Carolina at 12:30 p.m. (ET)/1:30 p.m. (AT) on Friday, November 28. All Discover Puerto Rico Shootout games will be streamed on FloCollege, and there will be live statistics for every game as well. Hofstra dropped a 61-55 home contest against Bucknell this past Saturday, putting the Pride at 1-3 heading into its Puerto Rico trip.
Alarice Gooden's strong senior season start continued against the Bison with a season high 15 points and five rebounds, while
Ayen Angoi scored 10 points on Saturday, and
Deivejon Harris led the team with eight rebounds and six points versus Bucknell.
Ranked seventh in the latest Associated Press Top 25 Women's College Basketball Poll, Maryland is 7-0 on the year after wins over Bethune-Cookman (95-49) and George Mason (84-62) last week. Oluchi Okananwa leads the team with 15.7 points per game as one of four Maryland players averaging double figures in scoring, while she is also averaging 4.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game, and Saylor Poffenbarger is the leading rebounder with 6.1 per game. The Terrapins will face #16 Kentucky on Wednesday, November 26, in its first game at the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout.
East Carolina sports a 2-3 record heading into the week following an 73-67 loss to Old Dominion this past Friday. Anzhané Hutton leads the Pirates in scoring and rebounding entering the week with 15.4 points per game and 9.6 boards per contest. East Carolina will face UCF on Wednesday and Illinois State on Thursday before Friday's contest against the Pride.
Thursday will be the first-ever meeting between Hofstra and Maryland in women's basketball, and Friday will be only the second-ever meeting between Hofstra and East Carolina. The previous showdown between the Pride and the Pirates came on December 3, 2000, at the Lady Pirate Classic, a 71-50 win for East Carolina.
