Boston, MA - In what will go down as one of the best defensive performances in program history, the Hofstra men's basketball team held Northeastern to only 37 points as the Pride captured a 55-37 road victory at Matthews Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Cruz Davis led Hofstra with 22 points, while
Jean Aranguren notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Pride.
The 37 points are the fewest the Pride has allowed in a game since a 48-34 win over Rider on January 18, 1989. In addition, it is the first time Hofstra has allowed fewer than 40 points in a game since a 44-39 win over Manhattan on December 9, 2009.
Hofstra upped its overall record to 9-6 and evened its conference mark at 1-1. Northeastern dropped to 9-6 and 1-1. It was also Northeastern's fewest points in a game since a 49-34 loss to Old Dominion on January 5, 2011.
The two teams combined for just 37 first half points as Northeastern took a 19-18 lead into the break. The Pride trailed 15-12 with under six minutes left before scoring six straight to retake the lead. The Huskies took the halftime advantage as they scored the final four points of the first half.
The Pride came out of the break and notched the first seven points of the half to open up a 25-18 lead with 17:45 showing on the clock after a basket from
Michael Graham. A pair of free throws from Northeastern would make it a two-point game, 32-30, with 8:54 left before the Pride began to pull away. The Pride put together an 11-3 run to take its first double-figure lead, 43-33, with 6:24 to play following a basket from Davis.
Hofstra would hold Northeastern without a point for the final four-plus minutes as they pulled away for the 18-point victory.
Graham added five points, eight rebounds, and two blocks for Hofstra, which also got six points and four rebounds from
German Plotnikov.
Rashad King had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Northeastern. Youri Fritz added seven points and 10 rebounds for the Huskies.
Hofstra is back in action on Thursday for the first of two home games next week. The Pride will host Charleston on Thursday at 7 p.m. before closing the weekend with a visit from UNCW on Saturday at 1 p.m. For ticket information visit HofstraTickets.com, call (516) HOF-TIXX, or stop by the Hofstra Athletics Ticket Office in the lobby of the David S.
