Orono, ME – Hofstra field hockey team battled back from a late one-goal deficit against Central Michigan, but the Chippewas came away with the 3-2 double overtime victory over the Pride in the final game of the weekend for Hofstra from Orono, Maine.
The Pride slips to 0-3 on the season, and Central Michigan moves to 3-1.
Hofstra opened the scoring in the second quarter on one of its four penalty corners.
Teresa Karoff inserted the ball to
Karissa Hough with 1:46 left before halftime, and
Jamie Mc Millan delivered a fierce backhander over the diving Central Michigan goalie for her first goal of the season.
Hofstra held the 1-0 lead until the fourth quarter, when Central Michigan's Zoey Emrick evened the score at a minute into the quarter before Isabella D'Alessandro scored the go-ahead goal with 2:09 remaining in regulation. Hofstra battled back and drew a penalty corner with under a minute to go, and Karoff swept a pass from
Tara McNally into the back of the net for the dramatic equalizer with 36 seconds to go before the horn.
Central Michigan drew a penalty stroke at the 2:08 mark of the first overtime, but
Pieke Roos dove to her right and used her stick to prevent the stroke from going in to preserve the 2-2 tie after the first overtime period. After nearly four minutes into the second overtime frame, Mallory Camryn got her stick onto the end of a long pass from Hailey Bainer that broke the Hofstra press, and Camryn deeked past Roos and rolled her shot into the empty goal for the winner.
Karoff finished the game with a goal and an assist for three points, and Roos posted seven saves against 13 shots faced.
Hofstra concludes its three-game stretch of road games on September 13 at 7 p.m. against Sacred Heart.
NOTES:
-With a goal today and a goal on Friday against Maine, Karoff has matched her single-season high of two goals originally set as a freshman in 2022.
-Central Michigan finished the game with a 13-12 edge in shots and a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners.
-Hofstra is now 0-2 all-time against Central Michigan. This was the first meeting between Hofstra and Central Michigan since 1998.
