Gough's Brace Leads Hofstra Past Towson

Hempstead, NY - Ellie Gough scored a pair of goals and Mathilde Braithwaite added a third as Hofstra defeated defending Coastal Athletic Association champion Towson, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at the newly-dedicated Captains Field on Alumnae Day. Hofstra dedicated the field during a halftime ceremony.

The win moved the Pride's record to 4-2-4 overall and 2-1-0 in the CAA. Towson dropped to 2-4-5 on the season and 0-2-1 in league play.

Gough, a graduate transfer from Middle Tennessee State, notched her first of the game at 16:07 of the first half as Louise Hayden sent a pass over the defender to Gough. The Pride midfielder ran into the box uncontested and sent a shot past Riley Melendez inside the far post.

Braithwaite made it a 2-0 game at 25:23 when she took a pass from Millie Davies on the right side and sent a tough-angled shot from distance over Melendez and inside the far post. It was Braithwaite's third goal of the season.

Gough finished her brace at the 59:32 mark, converting a brilliant through ball in the box from freshman Emma Johnson, who was making her first collegiate start. Melendez tried to make a play on the ball but Gough was able to right-foot volley the ball in for her fifth of the season.

The Tigers avoided the shutout at 82:12 as Malin Bernt Schops headed in Alexandra Rush's corner kick for her third goal of the season.

The Hofstra goalie tandem of Mackenzie Sullivan (first half) and Synne Danielsen (second half) totaled three saves on the day, all by Danielsen. Melendez, a two-time CAA goalkeeper of the year, stopped a pair of Hofstra shots.

Hofstra will return to action Thursday evening at Drexel. Kickoff in Philadelphia is set for 6 p.m.
