Hofstra Prevails In CAA Opener

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra took a 2-0 lead behind goals from Ellie Gough and Thorhildur Thorhallsdottir and then held off a late second half surge from Charleston to post a 2-1 victory in the Coastal Athletic Association opener for both teams Thursday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Hofstra moved to 3-1-4 overall and 1-0-0 in CAA action with the win. Charleston slipped to 7-2-1 overall and 1-0 in league play as its five-game unbeaten streak came to an end.

Gough, who added an assist on Thorhallsdottir's goal, opened the scoring at the 19:06 mark after stealing a pass from Cougars goalkeeper Savannah Barron inside the box and burying her team-leading third goal of the season. Gough picked up her team-best third assist as she slid a pass across the crease to Thorhallsdottir, who shifted feet before sending in her second of the season.

The Cougars would have several good chances throughout the game that were thwarted by either the Pride defense or goalkeepers Mackenzie Sullivan and Synne Danielsen. Sullivan had four first-half saves, while Danielsen made three stops in the second half. Hofstra's defense blocked several other shots or forced shots from difficult angles.

Charleston, which entered the game averaging three goals per game, would break through at the 83:56 mark as Emma Wennar sent a cross into the box that was converted by Bubbles Dever. It was Dever's fourth goal of the season.

Hofstra will look to move to 2-0 in league play when it plays at Delaware Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
