Hofstra Blanks Stony Brook Behind Martinez, Kennedy For Sixth Straight Win

Stony Brook, NY - Carlos Martinez and Russell Hunter combined on a six-hit shutout, and Will Kennedy drove in two runs as Hofstra blanked Stony Brook, 4-0, Saturday at Joe Nathan Field. The shutout was the Pride's first of the season. 

Hofstra won for the sixth consecutive game and won their third straight Coastal Athletic Association series. The Pride is now 20-27 overall and 10-10 in CAA play. Stony Brook is 22-22 overall and 10-10 in league play. 

Martinez (4-4) went eight innings, allowing six hits with a career-high tying nine strikeouts. Hunter came on in the ninth and retired the side in order in a non-save situation. 

Kennedy opened the scoring in the fifth inning with an opposite field leadoff home run to left. It was his first home run of the season. Kennedy also drove in Hofstra's second run with a seventh inning sacrifice fly. Matt Pelcher also had an RBI in the inning with a single up the middle. Steve Harrington, who was 3-4 on the day, knocked in the final run with a double in the eighth. 

Kennedy, Dylan Palmer, and Santino Rosso each had two hits in the game. 

JT Raab started and took the loss for the Seawolves, allowing three runs on six hits over six innings. Brett Paulsen and Erik Paulsen each had two hits to pace the Stony Brook offense. 

Hofstra will look for the series sweep Sunday with a 12 p.m. start time. 

Notes:
-Hofstra is 20-18 all-time against Stony Brook and has won four consecutive games.
-Martinez has won two straight decisions.
-The six-game winning streak is the longest since a seven-game streak in 2023. 
-The shutout was Hofstra's first since a 13-0 win over Towson on April 16, 2023.
