Anthony Mollica had his second consecutive hat trick and totaled four points to lead the Hofstra men's lacrosse team to an 11-9 win over Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon at LaValle Stadium.
John Madsen added a hat trick for the Pride, his team-leading ninth of the season.
The win by the Pride kept the Seawolves out of the CAA Championship. Hofstra finishes the season with a 6-9 overall record and a 3-4 CAA mark. Stony Brook closes the year with a 4-10 overall mark and a 2-5 conference ledger.
The first two goals of the game were scored by the Pride as
Sam Lutfi opened up the scoring off an assist from
Trevor Natalie. Hofstra would lead 4-2 at the end of the first quarter as Madsen scored with under a minute to go. The Pride would score two of the next three goals in the second quarter to open up a 6-3 lead at the break. Hofstra got another key goal with under a minute to play in the quarter as Mollica scored with 16 seconds remaining before intermission.
A goal from Natalie to open the fourth quarter would give Hofstra its first four-goal lead of the contest at 9-5. The Pride would still hold a 10-6 lead following a Mollica goal with 6:52 left before Stony Brook scored three straight to close the gap to one.
Griffin Turner would end any thoughts of a SBU comeback, though, as he scored with 1:30 left to seal the victory for the visitors.
Rory Jones had a career-high tying three assists in the game, while
Griffin Turner added three points on two goals and one assist. Natalie added a career-high three points on a goal and two assists.
Sean Henderson made 15 saves in net, including eight after halftime.
Chase Patterson won 15-24 face-offs and picked up six ground balls.
Nick Dupuis led Stony Brook with five points on a goal and four assists, while Noah Armitage had two goals and an assist for the Seawolves. Tommy Wilk had 13 saves in net.
NOTES
- Hofstra improved to 8-6 all-time against Stony Brook in men's lacrosse. The win was the Pride's first road victory in the series since 2018.
- The hat trick was the 13th in Madsen's career and the third of Mollica's career.
- Henderson tallied 10 or more saves for the sixth time this season.
- Jones previously had three assists against St. John's earlier this season.
- Natalie previously had two points on several occasions, most recently against Yale this season. His two assists marked a new career-high.
