Hempstead, NY – Stony Brook came back from a two-run deficit in the seventh inning to win 4-3 over the Hofstra softball team on a windy Saturday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium. The Pride slips to 13-20 and 11-6 in the Coastal Athletic Association, and Stony Brook moves to 23-13 and 11-6 in league play.
The Seawolves jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the first inning.
Becca Vaillancourt halved the lead with a lead-off home run in the bottom half of the first, and an
Alanna Morse RBI double put the Pride on top 2-1 after two innings. Hofstra added a third run in the bottom of the third on a bases loaded walk to
Gabriella Sultan, scoring
Olivia Malinowski to make it 3-0.
After allowing a two-run home run in the first inning,
Julia Apsel settled in and allowed only five Stony Brook batters to reach base until the seventh inning. Stony Brook singled on back-to-back at-bats before Apsel struck out her fourth Seawolves batter of the day for the first out of the inning, but a bunt single loaded the bases for Catherine Anne Kupinski, who drove in the go-ahead runs in Friday's 3-2 Stony Brook win. Kupinski again came through for the guests with a two-run single to put the Seawolves ahead by one late.
Vaillancourt went 3-4 at the plate with a single, a double, and a home run, while
Chelsea Manto laid down two successful bunt singles, and
Mackenzie Fitzgerald,
Gianna Iaquinto, and
Olivia Malinowski also delivered hits. Apsel pitched a complete game with four strikeouts against four runs allowed.
The series concludes on Sunday, April 14, at 12 p.m.
