Hempstead, NY - Fueled by four goals from
John Madsen, the Hofstra men's lacrosse team battled back from a four-goal second half deficit to tie the score but Drexel tallied the game-winner with 7:34 left to earn a 13-12 victory over the Pride on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.
Madsen finished with five points as he added an assist on
Blake Cooling's first career goal in the fourth quarter.
Hofstra dropped to 4-8 and 1-4 in CAA play with the loss, while Drexel improved to 5-7 and 2-3 in the league.
The Pride faced a big deficit early in the contest as Drexel scored the game's first four goals and led 6-2 after the first quarter. Goals from Madsen and
Rory Jones to open the second quarter quickly closed the gap to two before the Dragons eventually took a 7-4 lead into the break.
Drexel would hold a 10-6 lead with 6:47 left in the third quarter before Hofstra began to mount a rally. It would be the first of two four-goal deficits for the Pride as the lead was 12-8 for the Dragons before
Griffin Turner scored to start a 4-0 scoring run that eventually knotted the score at 12. After Turner scored, Colling,
Sam Lutfi, and
Justin Sykes added goals that made it 12-12 with 9:51 left in regulation. Jack Joyner would answer for Drexel, though, and scored the game-winner with 7:34 showing on the fourth quarter clock.
Colton Rudd had four points on a goal and three assists for the Pride, which also got a goal and two assists from
Rory Jones.
Sean Henderson had nine saves and four ground balls for Hofstra in the game.
Chase Patterson was 16-29 on face-offs and posted nine ground balls.
Luke Tomak had five goals for Drexel, while Gavin Kelly tallied a goal and four assists.

- Hofstra now leads the all-time series with Drexel, 25-12. The road team has won 12 of the last 13 meetings in the series between the Pride and the Dragons.
- The hat trick was Madsen's seventh this season and 11th of his career. He also tallied five or more points for the fourth time this season and fifth time in his career.
