North Carolina scored the first two goals of the game before Lutfi got Hofstra on the board nearly midway through the first quarter with an unassisted goal. The Tar Heels would go on a three-goal run to close out the period to lead 5-1 after the first 15 minutes of play.

The Pride made it a 5-2 game 1:10 into the second quarter on Justin Sykes' 11th goal of the season. However, North Carolina responded with four straight goals to lead 9-2 with 9:17 on the clock. North Carolina would net two more before the break and led 11-3 at intermission.

Owen Duffy scored two consecutive goals for North Carolina in the third quarter to build the lead to 10, 13-3, before Jones and Turner connected on another man-up goal with 8:16 to go. That made the score 13-4 and the nine goal difference was as close as Hofstra would get.
