Hofstra Opens Road Trip with Loss to UMBC

Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra softball team opened its five-game road trip on Tuesday with a 10-2 loss to UMBC in six innings. The loss to the Retrievers puts Hofstra at 6-13 so far this season, and UMBC evens its record to 9-9.

While Hofstra was held scoreless in the opening inning, UMBC jumped out to a quick four-run lead over the Pride in the bottom of the first. Ashley Della Guardia drove in two runs on a bases-clearing double, and Lyndsey Evix brought home another two with a two-run home run on the very next at-bat. Hofstra clawed a run back in the top of the second inning ax Kayla Wilson hit a bloop single into the outfield to score Chelsea Villar, who reached base on a double.

Emily Riggs blew the game open with a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to give the Retrievers a six-run lead, and they added another run to their lead on a Della Guardia RBI single. Alanna Morse scored on an UMBC error to make it an 8-2 game in the third inning, but Hofstra couldn't put another run on the board as UMBC ended the game on a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth.

Alanna Morse had two of Hofstra's four hits against the Retrievers, while Villar and Wilson had the other two, and Nicole Cancel drew a walk against UMBC.
