Hofstra Runs Away From LIU In Season Opening Victory

Hempstead, NY - Taylor Mennella had four goals and two assists, while Melissa Sconone added three goals and two assists to pace the Hofstra offense, and Luchianna Cardello stopped eight of the 10 shots she faces in three quarters of action as the Pride defeated LIU in the season opener for both teams. The game was played at Hofstra's James M. Shuart Stadium, a last minute venue change from LIU that caused a two-hour and 15 minute delay in the start time.

Hofstra also received two goals and an assist from a returning Nikki Mennella, who had her rookie season cut short due to injury. Kristen Redding had a goal and two assists in her college debut, while Kerry Walser had two points on a goal and an assist. Lauren Colletti and Megan Flannery each had one goal. Kate Fiola and Natalie Little posted one assist each.

Following LIU (0-1) scoring the opening goal less than a minute into the contest, Hofstra (1-0) would respond with five unanswered to take a 5-1 lead into halftime. Coletti tied the game at one with 12:31 on the clock off a pass from Taylor Mennella. Nikki Mennella put the Pride ahead to stay with 7:52 remaining in the opening quarter. Hofstra scored three goals in the second quarter with Sconone sandwiching a pair around a Taylor Mennella tally.

The Sharks scored first in the third quarter to make it a 5-2 game. But like in the first half, the Pride replied with a run. This one was an eight goal run that went into the fourth quarter and gave the Pride a 13-2 lead. Taylor Mennella scored three of her goals in the outburst. The Sharks would close the game with three consecutive goals to account for the final score.

Julia Trainor and Lindsey Lucia led LIU with a goal and an assist each. Lily Bilello had six saves in goal for the Sharks.

Hofstra returns to action next Saturday at Southern California. Game time is 4 p.m. Eastern time/1 p.m. Pacific time.
