Hempstead, NY -
Tyler Thomas had a game-high 26 points and drained the game-winner with 0.4 seconds left to lift the Hofstra men's basketball team to a thrilling 72-71 win over Stony Brook on Thursday evening at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
Jaquan Carlos was incredible for the Pride as he nearly tallied a triple-double with 11 points, nine rebounds, and 10 assists. He also had zero turnovers in the contest.
German Plotnikov established a new career-high with 17 points in the game.
The last second game-winner was the Pride's first since Eli Pemberton hit a layup with 0.5 seconds left to defeat Northeastern, 74-72, on January 9, 2020.
The win improved the Pride's record to 12-10 overall and 5-4 in league play. Stony Brook dropped to 11-11 and 4-5 in the CAA.
The final frantic moments saw
Darlinstone Dubar grab the rebound off a missed Stony Brook free throw and outlet the pass to Thomas, who drove the sideline and then drilled a 17-footer on the baseline for the one-point victory.
Hofstra scored almost immediately in the contest as
Jacco Fritz won the jump ball and Dubar scored the game's first points at the 19:55 mark. Stony Brook would lead the majority of the first half, though, including taking a 12-point advantage, 39-27, with 4:33 left before intermission. The Seawolves settled for a 10-point lead at the break as Dubar had a three-pointer and
Jaquan Carlos hit a free throw in the final 3:15 of the half.
The Seawolves would lead 50-38 at the 16:22 mark before the Pride began their first rally. Plotnikov scored with 15:50 on the clock to kick-start a 10-2 run that closed the gap to four, 52-48, with 13:06 left in regulation.
Stony Brook was in front, 58-51, with 8:40 to play before Hofstra scored eight straight points to retake the lead, 59-58, with 5:24 remaining.
The teams would go back and forth over the final few minutes with the visitors leading 71-68 with 15 seconds left. A basket from
Jacco Fritz made it a one-point game and on Stony Brook's next possession the Seawolves missed a free throw to set up the final seconds for Thomas's heroics.
Dubar finished with 10 points and seven rebounds for Hofstra, which also got eight points and five rebounds from Fritz.
Aaron Clarke led Stony Brook with 18 points, while Tyler Stephenson-Moore added 17.
