Jaquan Sanders scored a career-high 24 points, including five three-pointers, while
Jean Aranguren nearly tallied a triple-double with 18 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists to lead the Hofstra men's basketball team to a convincing 90-76 win over Iona in front of 3,347 at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on Friday evening.
Hofstra extended its home court win streak to 10 consecutive victories.
In total, Hofstra placed five players in double figures with
Cruz Davis adding 15 and
Michael Graham and
Silas Sunday chipping in with 14. Sanders and Sunday both had new career-highs in scoring in the game.
Hofstra moved to 2-0 with the win. Iona dropped to 0-2 with the loss. Hofstra is 2-0 on the season for the second time in the last three years.
The end of the first half saw Hofstra quickly turn a three-point lead into a double digit margin as the Pride scored eight straight points, including back-to-back three-pointers from Davis, to take a 43-32 lead with one minute left before intermission.
After leading by nine at the break, Hofstra would take its largest lead of the game at 59-39 as the Pride opened the second stanza on a 16-5 run. Iona was able to close the gap to as few as six at the 6:15 mark, but the Pride scored nine straight out of the time out to take a commanding 85-70 lead and put the finishing touches on an important early season victory.
The Pride shot nearly 55% from the field in the game and tallied 22 assists on 32 made field goals.
Graham added seven rebounds (six offensive) and four blocked shots for Hofstra, while Davis had five rebounds and five assists.
Clarence Rupert led Iona with 20 points and six rebounds, while DeJour Reaves added 12 points for the Gaels.
Hofstra is back in action next Wednesday when it takes on Seton Hall at 8:30 p.m. in the Icons of the Game contest from Nassau Coliseum.
NOTES
- Hofstra broke a 22-all tie in the all-time series with Iona and now leads the series, 23-22. The Pride has won three straight against the Gaels and five of the last eight meetings.
- Sanders previously had a career-high 15 points against SUNY Old Westbury on Monday.
- Sunday previously had a career-high of eight points most recently against Drexel on February 22, 2024.
