Cruz Davis had a game-high 22 points, including seven in overtime, to lead the Hofstra men's basketball team to a 68-63 win over Rice on Friday evening at the Baha Mar Convention Center.
KiJan Robinson was also in double figures for the Pride with 12 points, while
Michael Graham was huge with seven points and a game and season-high 15 rebounds.
The win moved Hofstra's record to 5-2 this season. Rice dropped to 5-2 with the loss.
Hofstra jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the first half as a free throw from
German Plotnikov gave the Pride the nine-point advantage with 12:42 left before the intermission. The Pride would stay in front the remainder of the half and took a three-point lead into the break.
Rice used an 8-0 run to start the second stanza to take a 36-31 lead. The Pride would still trail by five before scoring eight straight, including a bucket from Graham, to earn a 41-38 lead with 12:40 remaining in regulation. The Owls would even the score and send the contest to overtime with a basket with eight seconds remaining.
It was the Davis show in overtime as he scored seven points in the extra session to put the Pride on his back. Davis would give Hofstra the lead for good with 59 seconds left in overtime before
Khalil Farmer iced the game with a trio of free throws in the final 14 seconds.
Davis added a career-high eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the game.
Trae Broadnax led Rice with 16 points, while Kellen Amos added 13 for the Owls.
Hofstra will be back in action in the Baha Mar Hoops: Nassau Championship on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. when it takes on Tarleton State. The game will air on FloCollege and WRHU (HAWC).
NOTES
- Tonight was the first-ever meeting between Hofstra and Rice.
- Hofstra improved to 3-0 this season and 42-6 under
Speedy Claxton when holding its opponent under 70 points.
- Hofstra has won four consecutive overtime games (including two this season).
- Davis has led Hofstra in scoring three times this season and tonight was his second game this season with at least 20 points. He has reached double figures five times in 2024-25.
- Graham has led Hofstra in rebounding twice this season.
