Riverdale, NY – Manhattan outscored the Hofstra women's basketball team, 22-8, in the fourth quarter en route to a 62-49 win over the Pride Sunday evening from Draddy Gymnasium in Riverdale, New York.
The loss evens Hofstra's record at 2-2, and Manhattan moves to 3-1 with the win.
Chloe Sterling and
Emma Von Essen both finished in double-figures for the Pride, with Sterling scoring 14 points and Von Essen scoring 12 against the Jaspers.
Janaia Fargo scored a season-high nine points for the guests against Manhattan, and
LaNae' Corbett finished with a team-leading 10 rebounds in the game.
Hofstra raced out to a four-point lead inside the first three minutes of the contest with a 6-0 run after Manhattan scored the game's opening bucket, but the Jaspers tied the score with baskets on back-to-back possessions. Threes by Von Essen and Sterling gave Hofstra a six-point lead at the 4:56 mark, and
Zyheima Swint broke a lengthy scoring drought for both sides with a contested layup at 1:53 to grow Hofstra's lead to eight. The Pride scored three of the final five points of the quarter on a Swint free throw and a Sterling layup just before the buzzer, putting the score at 17-8 in favor of the Pride.
A three from Von Essen after Manhattan's Ines Gimenez Montserrat gave Hofstra a 10-point lead at 8:15 of the second quarter. Manhattan halved Hofstra's lead with five unanswered points before a Corbett free throw put the difference at six points. Manhattan continued to cut into the Pride's lead with a two from Petra Juric, but Von Essen responded with a three on the next possession to put margin at seven points with just over one minute remaining before halftime. The Jaspers sunk a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining to make the halftime score 24-19 to the road team.
The Jaspers scored seven of the first 10 points to open the third quarter, with Fargo providing three points on a corner three at 8:41, before the hosts tied the score on a Hana Mühl free throw at the 7:11 mark. Three more points from Mühl gave Manhattan its first lead of the game since 9:23 of the opening quarter before
Ramatoulaye Keita ended the Jasper run with a tough bucket at 5:44. Seven straight points from Sterling allowed Hofstra to retake the lead, and a free throw from Swint put the Hofstra lead at five with 2:59 left in the quarter. Manhattan cut the lead to three before
Micaela Carter sunk a three-pointer at 1:57 to make it a six-point difference, but Manhattan scored six unanswered points within a minute to even the score at 40-40. Corbett connected on a late free throw to give the Pride a one-point lead going into the fourth quarter.
Manhattan retook the lead for good with five straight points to open the fourth quarter, and the margin grew to five on a Gimenez Montserrat jumper at 7:06 remaining in regulation. After Manhattan's lead upped to six points, Von Essen connected on three free throws to cut Manhattan's lead to three with 4:29 still to play, but the Pride were held scoreless for the remainder of the game while the Jaspers scored the game's final 10 points to seal the win.
Juric and Mühl led the way for the Jaspers with 16 points each, while Juric pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
Hofstra returns to action on Friday, November 22, on the road against Lehigh. Tip-off against the Mountain Hawks is scheduled for 6 p.m.
