Hofstra Stumbles in Road Loss

Hampton, VA – The Hofstra women's basketball team clawed back from a 15-point fourth quarter deficit against Hampton, but the final buzzer sounded before the Pride could complete the comeback in a 67-62 defeat from the Hampton University Convocation Center to the Lady Pirates in CAA action.

The loss puts Hofstra at 7-11 overall and 1-6 in league play to end the month of January, while Hampton improves to 2-15 overall and 2-5 in the CAA.

Emma Von Essen led the Pride with 18 points on 7-11 shooting and 4-6 from three-point range, followed by Sorelle Ineza and Ally Knights with nine points each. Zyheima Swint pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds in the loss, while Ja'Miyah Bryant posted a season-high nine rebounds.

Hampton jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Von Essen scored the first Hofstra points of the afternoon on a three-pointer at 6:18. Hofstra cut Hampton's lead to one with nine of the next 13 points inside the four-minute mark, but a trey from Tyra Kennedy with three seconds left in the quarter put the score at 18-14 in favor of the Lady Pirates after one quarter of play.

Hofstra opened the second quarter with six unanswered points on a three from Selma Markisic, a Bryant free throw, and a jumper by Von Essen to pull in front by two with 6:28 on the clock, but Hampton responded with an 8-0 run to pull ahead 26-20. An Ineza three and a pair of Ally Knights free throws brought the visitors to within three, but Hampton went on a 6-2 run to close the second quarter with a seven-point advantage.

Hampton's lead grew to 10 twice prior to the third quarter media timeout before a second-chance layup by Swint cut the Hampton lead to eight at the 5:10 mark, but Hampton upped its lead to 12 with a 6-2 run lasting until 3:02 when Knights and Bryant made it an eight-point game going into the fourth quarter. Hampton raced to an 18-point lead with a lengthy 12-2 run to start the fourth quarter for the biggest lead of the day with 4:33 left in the contest.

Trailing by 15 with 2:33 to go in regulation, Von Essen drilled three-pointers on back-to-back possession to make it a nine-point game, and a Bryant layup forced Hampton to call a timeout with 1:43 left in the game and nursing a seven-point lead. Hofstra got to within four points twice inside the final 25 seconds of the game, but time would run out on the Pride as they dropped their sixth-consecutive game.

Camryn Hill was one of four Hampton players to finish with double figures, leading the way with 17 points.
