Storrs, CT - The Hofstra volleyball played a pair of matches on Saturday at the UConn Tournament and the Pride earned a three-set sweep of Merrimack earlier in the day before closing the tournament with a narrow five-set defeat to Lehigh.
Hofstra's record now sits at 6-1 on the season, while Merrimack is 1-4 and Lehigh is 4-1.
Set scores against Merrimack were 25-15, 25-14, and 25-14. Scores against Lehigh were 18-25, 25-22, 25-16, 16-25, 13-15.
In the first match of the day, the Pride placed three players in double figures in kills as
Yagmur Cinel had 13 kills,
Clara Bal added 12, and
Iyanna Garvin chipped in with 10.
Beatriz Alves tallied 27 assists and nine digs, while
Beatriz Braga added 13 digs and seven kills.
Cinel and Bal led the way against Lehigh as well with Cinel posting 15 kills and 11 digs in the match, while Bal had 15 kills. Alves totaled 47 assists and 14 digs for the Pride, which also got 12 digs and seven assists from
Chiara Cucco.
Emilly Nunes had a strong match with 12 kills and a .579 attack percentage.
Hofstra has a short break before returning to the state of Connecticut on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. road match at Sacred Heart.
NOTES
- Today marked the first-ever meeting between Hofstra and Merrimack. The Pride leads the all-time series with Lehigh, 10-1, after today's meeting. It was the first match between the schools since 1989.
- The 10 kills by Garvin against Merrimack marked the first double figure kill match of her career.
- Cinel tallied her first double-double of the season against Lehigh, while
Izadora Stedile (11K, 11D) had her second of the season in that match, and Alves picked up her second as well.
