Hempstead, NY – A two-goal performance from
Tara McNally, coupled with a shutout on the other end, propelled the Hofstra field hockey team to a 2-0 home victory over visiting Wagner Friday afternoon from Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium.
Hofstra moves to 2-1 with the win, and Wagner sinks to 0-2 to start the year.
After a scoreless first quarter that saw Hofstra held without a shot, the Pride pulled ahead with 4:38 remaining before halftime on the team's second penalty corner of the second quarter. McNally beat a diving Sarah Trask to the near post with a low, hard shot for the opener.
With Hofstra's defense limiting Wagner to just one shot in the second half, the Pride capitalized on the performance by the Hofstra defense while upping the intensity on the offensive end. McNally iced the game late in the fourth quarter on another penalty corner opportunity. McNally beat Trask to her left this time, fooling the Wagner goalie into diving the wrong way, as the hosts picked up the second win of the season.
Hella Vorpagel made one save to pick up her first collegiate win in the first start of her Hofstra career.
Kesia Richardson assisted on both Hofstra goals, while
Teresa Karoff and
Ella Bonnell also tallied assists for the Pride.
Trask made two stops for the Seahawks, while Sara Nelson led the team with two shots.
Hofstra faces a quick turnaround when they host Lehigh on Sunday at 1 p.m.
