Pearse's Late Goal, Strong Defensive Effort Carries Hofstra Past Rutgers

Piscataway, NJ - Olivia Pearse's 88th minute goal complemented a strong defensive effort by the Pride as Hofstra pulled off a 1-0 victory over Rutgers Sunday night at Yurcak Field. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Sullivan made five saves to notch her first career shutout and victory.

The victory was Hofstra's first of the season and evened the Pride's record at 1-1. Rutgers, which is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, saw its record slip to 1-1 with the loss.

The game seemed destined for a scoreless draw as time ticked down in the second half, but the Pride started a counterattack with Wiktoria Fronc sending a pass to Pearse on the right side, well behind the 18-yard box. The Pride junior sent in a shot from distance that went over the head of Rutgers keeper Olivia Bodmer into the top left of the goal.

Both teams played staunch defense as Sullivan had three first half stops and added two more in the second. A Hofstra defender also cleared a ball of the line to keep the Scarlet Knights off the board in the first half. Rutgers gave up eight shots to the Pride with Bodmer making three saves. The Scarlet Knights also had a ball cleared off the line by a defender.

Hofstra will return to action Friday at Columbia with a 2 p.m. kickoff.

Notes:
