Hofstra Drops Doubleheader At Charleston

Mt. Pleasant, SC - Hofstra rallied from a 5-0 deficit in game two to take a 7-5 lead before Charleston tied the game in the eighth and won on a walk-off hit by pitch in the bottom of the ninth to post an 8-7 victory and sweep a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader from the Pride Friday at Patriots Point. In the opener, Hofstra took a 2-0 lead before Charleston scored seven unanswered runs to post a 7-2 victory.

Hofstra dropped to 10-19 overall and 5-9 in the CAA with the losses. Charleston, which snapped a five-game losing streak, moved to 18-12 overall and 9-5 in league action.

The Pride opened the scoring in game one as Santino Rosso was hit by a pitch and went to third on a single from Ryan Morash. Rosso then came in to score on a balk by starter Ty Good. In the third, Hofstra loaded the bases on two walks and a single before Rosso drew a walk of his own to force in the second run.

But that would be all Hofstra would get as Good escaped further damage and the Cougars offense came alive in the bottom of the frame with Cole Mathis driving in two runs with a triple and then coming in on an RBI groundout from JT Marr. Charleston would add single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, and two more in the seventh to close the scoring.

Good (3-2) allowed two runs on three hits over 6 ⅔ innings with three strikeouts. Aidan Hunter pitched the final 2 ⅓ innings without allowing a hit to notch his second save.

Cade Henry (1-5) took the loss for Hofstra after allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits over 5 ⅓ innings. Mark Faello followed with 1 ⅔ innings of relief, allowing two unearned runs. Danny Kelleher threw a scoreless inning.

In game two, Mathis hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first and trotter Harlan and Jared Kirven added back-to-back solo home runs in the third as the Cougars built a 5-0 lead.

The Pride tied the game in the top of the sixth with five runs. Hofstra loaded the bases and scored on an error, a Zach Bailey hit by pitch, and a three-run pinch hit double off the bat of Brian Morrell following a nine-pitch at-bat against Charleston All-American William Privette.

Kevin Bruggeman put Hofstra on top in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to score Dylan Palmer, who doubled and went to third on a passed ball. Morrell added an insurance run in the eighth with an infield single.

The Cougars put runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and Ben Hamacher delivered a check swing single that found its way through the right side that drove in both runs and tied the score. In the ninth, Charleston loaded the bases on three walks (one intentional) before Harlan was hit by Mike McKenna's 1-2 pitch to drive in the winning run.

Jake Brink (2-0), Charleston's fourth pitcher of the game, picked up the win with 1 ⅔ innings of one-hit relief. Michael O'Hanlon (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on one hit in one inning.

Bruggeman and Morrell each had a pair of hits for the Pride with Morrell driving in four runs.

The series concludes Sunday at 12 p.m.
