Moving On; Hofstra Headed To CAA Quarterfinals

Williamsburg, VA - Matthew Garcia's three-set win at No. 4 singles clinched a 4-2 victory for #9 Hofstra as the Pride defeated #8 Charleston in a first round match at the 2023 Colonial Athletic Association Championship at the Mackesy Tennis Center on the campus of William & Mary. The Pride won at the CAA Championship for the first time since the 2008 season.

Ostap Kovalenko and Jonathan Mahrt Guyou posted a 6-2 win over Mattia Bernardi and Robby Krick at No. 1, while  Kaita Odani and Josh Reynolds downed Mattias Gaedechens and Zac Larke by the same score at No. 3.

Bo Cautaerts kept the Hofstra momentum rolling into singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Larke at the No. 2 flight. Reynolds put the Pride up by a 3-0 score with a win over Krick at the No. 3 flight (7-6 [7-5]. 6-3).

The Cougars (10-11) made things interesting with wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 flight to pull within one, 3-2. However, Garcia was able to break serve against Noah Borges twice in the decisive third set including in the match-clinching game as he posted a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 win.

Hofstra will play top-seeded UNCW in the CAA Championship Quarterfinals Friday morning at 9 a.m. The Seahawks had a first round bye.
