Hofstra Slugs Its Way Past LIU

Brookville, NY - Kevin Bruggeman hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Steve Harringon added a grand slam in the ninth to back the strong pitching of starter Steven Kaenzig and a trio of relievers as Hofstra defeated LIU, 8-1, Tuesday at LIU Baseball Stadium.

Hofstra snapped a three-game losing streak with the win and improved to 18-22 on the season. The Sharks dropped to 12-26 with the loss.

The Pride would score all they would need in their first turn at bat as Jake Liberatore laced a one-out single and Bruggeman followed with his fifth home run of the season. Hofsstra would add a run in the second as Dylan Palmer drew a two-out walk, stole second and third, and came in on a throwing error by the LIU catcher. Liberatore drove in Hofstra's fourth run with a ground out that plated Zach Bailey. The Pride loaded the bases in the ninth before Harrington yanked a 3-1 pitch over the right field fence for a grand slam.

Kaenzig pitched 4 ⅔ innings, allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts. Mark Faello (4-5) followed with 1 ⅓ innings, allowing a hit with three strikeouts. John Mikolaicyk came on for two hitless innings with a pair of strikeouts before Michael O'Hanlon worked around a pair of hits in the ninth by striking out the side to close it out.

Hofstra had seven hits on the day by seven different players. Bruggeman scored two runs, as did Palmer and Bailey.

Jarod Wade had two of LIU's nine hits and drove in the lone Sharks run. Evan Panjwani (0-3) started and took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits in three innings.
