Eight Wrestlers Earn EIWA Academic Acheivement Awards

Hempstead, NY - Eight members of the Hofstra wrestling team - Chase Liardi, Justin Hoyle, Michael Leandrou, Joe McGinty, Ross McFarland, Jacob Ferreira, Trey Rogers, and Zachary Knighton-Ward - were named recipients of Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Academic Achievement Awards for the 2022-23 season, the conference announced today. A total of 103 wrestlers from the league's 17 programs were recognized. 

The EIWA Academic Achievement Awards are presented to conference wrestlers who have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 and competed in the EIWA Championships, or achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and represented the EIWA and their institution at the NCAA Championships. All eight Hofstra honorees achieved cumulative GPAs of 3.2 or higher and competed at the EIWA Championships, with Ferreira and Rogers representing the program at the NCAA Championships.

Liardi, a red-shirt freshman finance major, owns a 3.39 grade point average and posted 10 wins in his first season at Hofstra after transferring from Ohio State. 

Hoyle, a senior majoring in supply chain management, has compiled a 3.44 grade point average. On the mat, he ranked third on the team with 19 wins and placed seventh at the EIWA Championships at 141 pounds. This is Hoyle's fourth EIWA Academic Achievement Award.

Leandrou, a junior exercise science major, has a 3.39 grade point average and is receiving the honor for the second consecutive year. He won three matches for the Pride in 2022-23. 

McGinty is a junior health science major with a 3.58 grade point average. He posted five wins this past season. This marks McGinty's third EIWA Academic Achievement Award.

McFarland, a senior physical education major, owns a 3.25 grade point average. He posted 15 victories this past season and placed seventh at the EIWA Championships. McFarland is now a two-time recipient of the EIWA Academic Achievement Award. 

Ferreira is a graduate student majoring in social studies education. He carries a 3.57 grade point average. In his first season with the Pride, Ferreira won a team best 22 matches, placed sixth at the EIWA Championships at 184 pounds, and was an NCAA qualifier for the first time in his career.

Rogers, a senior pre-medical studies major, carries a 3.93 grade point average and is now a five-time honoree. The fifth-place EIWA finisher at 197 pounds, Rogers won 21 matches, was 10-0 in dual matches, and qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second time in his career. 

Knighton-Ward, a graduate student majoring in business administration, owns a 3.41 grade point average. He won 17 matches this past season. This is Knighton-Ward's third EIWA Academic Achievement Award.
