Hempstead, NY -
Luchianna Cardello earned her first career win in net as she posted nine saves in leading the Hofstra women's lacrosse team to a 15-2 win over Wagner on Tuesday evening at Hameline Field. The two goals were the fewest allowed by the Pride since a 13-1 win over Bucknell on February 17, 2018.
The offense had quite a showing as well as three different players posted hat tricks with
Taylor Mennella notching seven points (3G, 4A),
Kerry Walser with five points (4G, 1A), and
Rachel Graff with three goals.
Hofstra ended a four-game losing skid with the win and improved to 3-4. Wagner fell to 1-5 with the loss.
The first quarter would only see a pair of goals scored with both coming off Pride sticks as Graff opened the scoring at the 3:51 mark and
Katie Kelly tallied her first of the game just over a minute later. Hofstra would set the tone in the second quarter as they added four more goals, including a pair from Walser, to take a 6-0 lead into the break.
The lead would grow to 10-0 with less than two minutes left in the third quarter as
Kate Fiola put the Pride in double figures. Wagner finally ended the dreams of a Hofstra shutout with 1:04 left in the third quarter but the Pride added three quick goals to open the fourth to make it a 13-1 contest before settling in for the 15-2 victory.
Kelly ended the day with three points on two goals and an assist, while Fiola and
Megan Flannery each tallied a goal and an assist. Walser and Fiola each led the Pride with three ground balls and two caused turnovers in the game, while
Brynn Hepting had four draw controls and Flannery posted three in the win.
Kelsey Scheidel and Megan Greco each had a goal for the Seahawks, which got nine saves from Lauren DiStefano.
The Pride outshot the Seahawks, 29-14, and was a perfect 18-18 on clears in the contest.
Hofstra is back in action on Sunday when it hosts #20 Southern California at 12 p.m. For ticket information visit HofstraTickets.com. That game will also air on FloLive.
