Hofstra Drops Instant Classic In CAA Semifinals To UNCW

Washington, DC - Aaron Estrada had 25 points, five rebounds and six assists, but UNCW scored eight of the 10 points in the extra session to defeat the Hofstra men's basketball team, 79-73, in overtime of the Colonial Athletic Association semifinal on Monday evening at the Entertainment & Sports Arena.

The loss ended Hofstra's 12-game win streak, the fifth-longest in program history. The Pride fell to 24-9 with the defeat, while UNCW improved to 24-9 and advanced to the CAA Championship Game on Tuesday.

Jaquan Carlos was tremendous for Hofstra with 19 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Hofstra recovered from an early five-point deficit and scored nine straight points to open up a 21-9 lead with 12:25 left in the first half. Estrada had back-to-back baskets during the run to fuel the spurt. A three-pointer from Estrada with 6:16 left in the opening stanza pushed the lead back to 10, 38-28, but UNCW used a 10-1 run to make it a one-point game at 39-38 with 3:35 left. The Pride trailed by one late in the half before a pair of free throws from Carlos allowed Hofstra to take a one-point lead into the break.

The Seahawks scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 49-43 lead with 17:57 left in regulation. Carlos would come up huge on a pair of occasions, though, and hit two three-pointers to keep it at 53-49 with 15:22 remaining. A three-pointer from Tyler Thomas would put the Pride back in front with just over 11 minutes left and the teams would go back and forth over the next few minutes. The Pride did need to rally one more time in regulation as Hofstra trailed 66-59 with 7:07 left. Estrada had five points during a game-tying 9-2 run that set up the exciting finish. Down three, Thomas was fouled shooting a three-pointer and drained all three with 19 seconds left in regulation and UNCW was unable to score on its ensuing possession to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, the Seahawks scored the first three points before Estrada hit a pair of free throws to make it a 74-73 game with 1:44 left. Hofstra would be unable to get over the hump, though, as UNCW hit a trio of free throws in the final 14 seconds to ice the victory.

Thomas added 14 points and six rebounds for the Pride.

Trazarien White had 21 points and 11 rebounds for UNCW, which also got 17 points from Maleeck Harden-Hayes and Donovan Newby.

Hofstra will learn its postseason fate on Sunday, March 12. The Pride is guaranteed a bid to the NIT by virtue of its CAA regular season title.
