John Madsen had a career-best five points on three goals and two assists, but #15 Villanova used a big third quarter to earn a 15-8 victory over the Hofstra men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.
Villanova improved to 3-1 with the win, while Hofstra saw its two-game win streak come to an end and fell to 2-4.
Hofstra got on the board first in the contest with goals from
Griffin Turner and Madsen to make it 2-0 at the 8:34 mark of the first quarter. After Villanova tied the score, Madsen and
Rory Jones tallied Pride goals sandwiched around a Wildcat goal to put Hofstra in front, 4-3, early in the second quarter.
Villanova would close the second quarter with three consecutive goals and start the third stanza with five straight to make it an 8-0 run in total to put the visitors in front, 11-4, with 6:51 left in the third.
Danny DeSanti ended the run at the 5:30 mark of the third, but Villanova would not allow Hofstra to get any closer than seven the rest of the way in capturing the win over the Pride.
Colton Rudd chipped in with a goal and an assist for Hofstra, while
Daniel Ochs had a team-best five ground balls for the Pride.
Mac Gates made 14 saves for Hofstra.
Patrick Daly had four goals and three ground balls for Villanova, while Mason Reale had three goals.

- Hofstra is 8-10 all-time against Villanova.
- Madsen's previous career-high of four points came on a trio of occasions, most recently at St. John's on February 25.
- The 14 saves by Gates marked the 19th time in his career he has reached double figures in saves and the fourth time this season.
- Madsen's hat trick was his third of the season and fourth of his career.
- The five ground balls by Ochs were a new career-high. His previous high of four came at Michigan on February 18.
