Hempstead, NY - Despite a masterful pitching performance from
Nikki Mullin in the first game, the Hofstra softball team dropped a pair of games to Boston College on Friday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium.
Hofstra fell to 5-12 with the losses, while Boston College improved to 14-7 with the wins.
Game One - Boston College 1, Hofstra 0
It was a pitcher's duel between Hofstra's
Nikki Mullin and Boston College's Abby Dunning as both threw gems in the one-run game. Both pitchers went the distance with Mullin throwing 119 pitches and 73 for strikes, while Dunning threw 140 pitches with 82 strikes. The only run was scored in the first inning as Kali Case led off the game with a single. Hannah Slike followed with another single and Case would score on a Pride error for the early Eagles lead. Hofstra threatened numerous times in the game, including in the third when a double from
Angelina Ioppolo put runners on second and third. But the Pride was unable to bring home a run. The sixth inning proved to be Hofstra's best chance to tie or take the lead as
Aliya Catanzarita led off with a single.
Olivia Malinowski followed with a walk and
Becca Vaillancourt singled to load the bases. The Pride had a pair of opportunities with one out, but a fly out followed by a ground out ended the threat. In the seventh, Hofstra got a runner on second on a single by
Kasey Collins and a Boston College error, but the game would come to an end on a ground out to third.
Game Two - Boston College 8, Hofstra 0
The Eagles scored single runs in each of the first three innings to jump out to an early 3-0 advantage and then the visitors would tack on a three-spot in the fourth inning to break open the game. Hannah Slike hit a homerun to left in the first inning to open the scoring and would add her second long ball of the game in the fourth inning. Hofstra would get its first hit of the game in the fifth inning via a Collins bunt single and notched their second hit in the sixth as
Meghan Giordano singled to open the bottom half of the inning in the Pride's final at bat.
Collins finished with a pair of hits in the doubleheader and also reached base twice on walks. Giordano had a hit a two walks on the afternoon.
Hofstra and Boston College will finish the three-game series on Saturday, pending weather, at 12 p.m. That game will air on FloSoftball.
