Sorelle Ineza and
Emma Von Essen both finished in double-figures for the Pride, but the Hofstra women's basketball team suffered a 58-34 defeat inside the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex to Drexel in Colonial Athletic Association action.
Hofstra slips to 9-17 overall and 3-12 in the conference with the loss. The win improves Drexel to 20-7 overall and 12-4 in the CAA.
Ineza scored 12 points to extend her streak of consecutive games with at least 10 points to eight, and Von Essen pitched in with 11 points against the Dragons.
Brandy Thomas led all players with eight rebounds, and Von Essen and
Rosi Nicholson recorded two steals each.
After an Ineza jumper got the Pride on the board at the 8:43 mark of the opening quarter, Drexel scored six straight points to lead by six. Von Essen hit the first of three three-pointers in the game to halve the deficit, but a three-point play by Drexel's leading scorer Keishana Washington brought the lead back to six for the visitors. Von Essen's second three of the quarter put the score at 11-8 for the Dragons at the quarter buzzer.
Drexel opened the second quarter with a 10-1 run lasting over four minutes, putting the Dragons ahead 21-9 until Thomas ended the run with a driving layup. Ineza hit three straight free throws to bring the deficit back to single-digits with 3:43 remaining in the quarter. Washington converted another three-point possession to make it a 10-point lead for the visitors. The teams traded two-point baskets inside the final three minutes – with a layup by Swint and a jumper from Chloe Hodges – to put the score at 26-16 at halftime.
Drexel's lead ballooned to as many as 18 points in the third quarter, and the scoring continued for the visitors as they outscored Hofstra 17-8 in the fourth quarter to come away with the 24-point win over the Pride.
Washington finished with 21 points for the Dragons and added six rebounds. Hetta Saatman was the next-highest scoring Drexel player with 10 points.
Hofstra wraps up its home schedule on Sunday, February 26, against Monmouth (12-14, 7-8 CAA). Prior to the 2 p.m. game against the Hawks, Hofstra will honor its three departing seniors in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony. Sunday's game can be viewed on MSG Network and FloHoops.
