John Madsen had a first quarter hat trick to lead a spirited effort for the Pride as the Hofstra men's lacrosse team jumped out to an 8-0 commanding lead en route to a 13-7 victory over Long Island on Tuesday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.
Gerard Kane added a hat trick and led the Pride with six points in the contest, tying his career-high in points.
Chase Patterson was tremendous for Hofstra on face-offs as he won 19 of 23 against six different Sharks.
Hofstra picked up its first win of the season following a pair of narrow one-goal defeats to Navy and Michigan. Long Island fell to 0-3 with the loss.
The Pride wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the contest, scoring four goals in the opening four minutes of the game.
Justin Sykes opened the scoring at the 13:19 mark and just six seconds later Madsen scored his first of the game off an assist from Patterson. Hofstra would add four more goals before the end of the quarter with Madsen completing his hat trick with 5:45 left in the opening stanza. The Pride scored its eighth goal of the quarter with just one second remaining.
The second quarter saw each team score twice to allow the Pride to take the eight-goal lead into the locker room.
Griffin Turner and Kane were Hofstra's goal scorers in the quarter.
LIU scored the first three goals of the third quarter to close the gap to 10-5, but goals from Kane and
Rory Jones gave Hofstra a commanding 12-5 lead and they would go on to earn the six-goal victory.
Colton Rudd had a goal and a career-high three assists for the Pride, while
Mac Gates made eight saves and added three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Patterson posted 15 ground balls, while
Tom Ford led Hofstra with three caused turnovers.
Marcin Maleski had three goals for LIU, while Nick Colantonio tallied a goal and two assists. Sean Gillman had a game-high 11 saves and added three ground balls for the Sharks.
Hofstra returns to action on Saturday when it travels to St. John's for a 1 p.m. contest.
NOTES
- Hofstra improved to 17-9 all-time against Long Island.
- The hat trick was the second of the season for both Kane and Madsen and marked the fifth of Kane's career and the third of Madsen's career.
- With his six points, Kane eclipsed five points in a game for the second time this season and third time in his career.
