Stony Brook, NY – Three members of the Hofstra women's basketball team finished in double-figures, but the Pride suffered a 70-60 road defeat to Colonial Athletic Association and Long Island rival Stony Brook on Sunday from the IslandFederal Credit Union Arena.
Hofstra record drops to 9-14 overall and 3-9 in the CAA following the loss. The Seawolves improve to 14-9 overall and 8-4 in the conference.
Zyheima Swint nearly matched her career-high with 18 points against the Seawolves on 8-10 from the floor while pulling down six rebounds.
Emma Von Essen recorded 14 points on 6-10 shooting and two three-pointers, and
Sorelle Ineza chipped in with 11 points for the Pride.
Rosi Nicholson tallied a team-high seven rebounds to pair with seven points scored, and
Janaia Fargo recorded eight points and five rebounds in her first start for Hofstra.
Four straight points by Swint gave the Pride an early 4-0 lead before Stony Brook made it a one-point game with 7:04 still to play in the quarter. Baskets by Von Essen and
Rosi Nicholson put Hofstra in front by five at the 5:20 mark before Gigi Gonzalez brought the hosts to within three 20 seconds later. An Ineza layup and free throw gave the Pride a six-point lead over Stony Brook, and the Pride put their lead at six twice more before the quarter ended with Hofstra on top, 20-14.
Hofstra's lead grew to eight with a pair of Swint free throws, but Stony Brook closed the gap to two points with six unanswered points to trail, 22-20, three minutes into the second quarter. An
Ally Knights free throw and a Von Essen jumper put the Pride in front by three, but a 9-0 Stony Brook run put the hosts ahead by six with 2:11 remaining before halftime. Von Essen hit back-to-back jumpers to bring Hofstra within four, but Gonzalez converted a pair of free throws to send the Pride into the locker room trailing Stony Brook, 35-29.
Stony Brook outscored Hofstra, 20-13, in the third quarter to increase its lead to 13 going into the final frame. Fargo got the comeback attempt started with the first five points of the quarter, trimming the deficit to eight points. Stony Brook rebuilt its lead to 13 courtesy of a 7-2 run in the span of almost a minute. A Nicholson second-chance layup at 6:43 kicked off an 11-0 Hofstra run lasting over four minutes, bringing the Pride to within two of the hosts. Nicholson and
Alarice Gooden each scored free throws, while Swint converted a pair of layups, and Ineza knocked down a three-pointer. Unfortunately, Stony Brook closed the game out with eight unanswered points to seal the conference win.
All five of Stony Brook's starters finished in double-figures, with Anastasia Warren leading the way with 19 points.
Hofstra returns to the Mack Sports Complex on Friday, February 17, for a date with Delaware (13-10, 6-6 CAA) at 7 p.m. Hofstra women's basketball will host its Pride Night/Equity & Inclusion Game against the Fightin' Blue Hens.
