No. 14 Hofstra Ties No. 3 North Carolina; Tar Heels Advance On Penalty Kicks

Chapel Hill, NC - Hofstra got first half goals from Teddy Baker and Ryan Carmichael, but third-seeded North Carolina scored the equalizer with less than five minutes to go and following a pair of scoreless overtimes, the Tar Heels advanced on penalty kicks (5-3) to move on to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship Sunday night at Dorrance Field.

The Pride ends its season with a 14-3-5 record following the 2-2 draw. The Tar Heels move on to host Oregon State with a record of 11-3-7.

Hofstra opened the scoring at the 17:27 mark after Eliot Goldthorp sent in a long cross from the right side that was headed by Carmichael to the feet of Baker inside the six-yard box. The junior sent his shot from the left side across the goal mouth into the right corner. The Tar Heels tied the score less than three minutes later on Ahmad Al Qaq's header.

The Pride would retake the lead at the 26:16 mark, taking advantage of a North Carolina miscue in the defensive end. Carmichael intercepted a bad pass outside the box and came in alone before sending a shot past Andrew Cordes for his 17th goal of the season.

The score remained that way until late in the second half when North Carolina's Martin Vician, who had a brace against Memphis in the second round, got his first of the game with 4:55 remaining in regulation after sending in a pass from Quenzi Huerman. The Tar Heels would have several good chances in the final minutes including three shots that were blocked by Hofstra defenders.

Neither team had shots on goal in the extra time as the teams went to penalty kicks. The Tar Heels converted all five of their attempts with Andrew Czech notching the deciding kick. Cordes stopped the Pride's second kick, by Stefan Mason
