Hempstead, NY -
Yagmur Cinel had another outstanding match with 15 kills, six digs, four blocks, and two service aces to lead the Hofstra volleyball team to a thrilling five-set win over Campbell on Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.
The win completed a weekend sweep of the Camels for the Pride as Hofstra moved into a tie for fourth in the conference standings with the two wins.
Clara Bal and
Izadora Stedile each posted 10 kills for the Pride in the match, with Bal adding a career-high 20 digs.
Chiara Cucco picked up a match-high 21 digs for Hofstra, while
Beatriz Alves notched 48 assists, 10 digs, four kills, and three blocks.
Hofstra improved to 18-7 overall and 8-6 in CAA action with the win. Campbell saw its record fall to 12-12 and 9-5 in the league. The win was Hofstra's first in five sets this season.
Set scores were 16-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18, and 15-12.
The Camels jumped out early in the match as they used strong offense and timely defense in the first set to earn the opening set win. Using a .485 attack percentage in the second set, the Pride knotted the score at one set apiece. Campbell would answer once again in the third set, which meant Hofstra would need to win the final two sets to capture the win. The Pride's defense made the difference in the fourth set, holding the Camels to a .000 attack percentage.
Hofstra scored the first two points of the fifth stanza before Campbell responded with three straight to take the early advantage. It was back and forth both ways as neither team could pull away. With the score tied at 12, Stedile tallied a kill and the next two points were delivered by Cinel kills as Hofstra captured one of the more exciting victories of the season.
Sarah Pierre was strong throughout the match for the Pride with seven kills on 10 attempts and no errors, while also adding five blocks.
Emilly Nunes had a match-high seven blocks and chipped in with five kills.
Gwen Wolkow led Campbell with 15 kills, while Chloe Cook added 14.
